Software
Software adds meaning to computers, allowing teachers and pupils to improve their literacy, reading comprehension and subject knowledge. Digital Links works with leading software developers and local curriculum advisers to source and provide the most appropriate and engaging learning materials for country projects.
Digital Links also works with Microsoft and the Open Source movement to advise, supply and provide projects with the appropriate operating systems
Training
Crucial to our long-term goal of improving computer literacy in developing countries, is the availability of experienced IT teachers and skilled hardware technicians. We therefore believe that in addition to the distribution of affordable computers, we must ensure that training is available for everyone that we work with.
We assist in building the capacity of our distribution partners through the use of volunteer placements. Our training is delivered through highly qualified IT volunteers who come either from the UK or from countries where we have established projects, such as Kenya. We assist our partners to set up Technical Service Centre’s (TSC), enabling them to handle the deployment of computers on a large scale, and to offer technical support and training to others.
In order to assist our distribution partners to provide support to schools, colleges, and community-based organisations, Digital Links is working to provide a range of CD-based training materials. This has been done in partnership with Net2Work, and our current titles are:
ICT Basics: This course covers all versions of Microsoft Office and is complete with a teacher’s guide. The CD contains a large bank of questions that can be used for school examinations and there is also a facility that allows students to take an internationally accredited online exam.
Hardware Maintenance and Networking: A comprehensive training and troubleshooting resource that is specifically designed for an African context. The course covers hardware basics, installing and configuring software, troubleshooting, maintenance and disposal, and networking.
